One of the main reasons Alfred Wegener used to prove that his theory that the continents were once connected were the rock formations on each continent. Rock formations that are the same on two continents are the North and South American coastlines, the European and Africa coastlines and the South American and African coastlines. The North American and European continents took 200 million years to separate, and the South American and African continents took 20 million years to separate. It is proved that these coastlines have the same rock formations on their coastlines which supports the theory that they were once connected together and broke apart. Another discovery is that the rock formations on the coast of continents and the mineral deposits on two different continents match up if you put them back together. This is another reason to support Alfred Wegener’s theory of Continental Drift.
